I use the 7 continent model.
America could be considered a whole continent, but I always think of them as north and south.
Central America is not a continent, we just call the area that. And Africa is one big continent, South Africa is a country.

The United States Of America is the proper name of the COUNTRY.  The CONTINENT in which the U.S. is located is North America, also improper name!

We call ourselves America sometimes. We call Mexico, Mexico. However--random fact moment--did you know Mexico is actually the United States of Mexico (Estados Unidos de Mexico)?
The proper name that is given out is the "United States of America." It is called North America and South America. America, the grand continent you speak of, has no true name. If you really wanted to go far, you could call it the Western Hemisphere. Thank you for your time.
